Discovery Yoga-Kripalu Tradition Workshop

What is Discovery / Kripalu Tradition Yoga?

It is rooted in the teachings of Swami Kripalvananda at Kripalu.

With traditional beginnings in ancient yogic texts and literature, Kripalu yoga developed from the teachings of Swami Kripalvananda. Amrit Desai, a native of India and disciple of Swami Kripalu, brought the teachings to the United States in the 1960's and established the first Kripalu ashram in Pennsylvania. Swami Kripalu spent four years in this Ashram, where he delivered a series of lectures to the senior teachers of Kripalu yoga.

Deva Parnell was a disciple of Yogi Amrit Desai for more than 12 years at Kripalu in Pennsylvania, and when the Ashram moved to Massachusetts. Deva was a senior teacher at Kripalu. Years later, when changes came, Deva moved back to Florida and developed Discovery in the Kripalu tradition, as well as Discovery/Kripalu Teacher Training. Deva has guided students and teachers worldwide for more than 35 years. Deva's program follows the tenets of Kripalu Yoga.

Kripalu yoga is a more gentle form of Hatha yoga. It incorporates asana, breathing techniques, mudras, and meditation, which draw awareness to the sensations of the body, breath, and mind. Kripalu yoga consists of three stages:

  1. A focus on proper alignment of the body, where the poses are held for a short time

  2. A deepening of awareness of the sensations felt in the body as the poses are held for a longer time.

  3. A more meditative state wherein the practitioner is guided by their intuitive knowledge and moves according to the flow of prana

Advanced Kripalu yoga asanas encompass all three stages of practice.

Discovery/Kripalu philosophy is "The practice of yoga is not about imposing a form upon yourself. It is discovering yourself through a form."

Allowing students with challenges in the body to practice with guidance and compassion.

In this workshop, you will experience a Discovery/Kripalu class, learn about the three stages of Kripalu Yoga, and have the opportunity to observe the 3rd stage of Kripalu Yoga.

There will also be time for questions about the teacher trainer program.

presented by Micki"Padma" Higgins, ERYT 500 Master Level, YACEP, Senior Trainer of Discovery/ Kripalu Tradition Yoga.

Yin Yoga Teacher Training (20 CEUs)

Nurture yourself with a weekend yoga intensive, where you can retreat from the daily hustle and bustle to dive deep into the wisdom of yoga. This RYT 300 level workshop is designed for committed students as well as yoga teachers. It's a 20 hour weekend immersion that stretches us physically, emotionally and mentally as a catalyst for holistic growth and renewal. The group bonding and the intensive format can be transformative.

Yin Yoga has become one of the most popular styles of yoga today, with many yoga studios now offering yin classes to balance their (yang) programs. Yin is in! Yin yoga has a distinct pace, physiology, and philosophy, as well as unique postures. It is restorative and invigorating; it has a meditative and healing quality; and it is well suited for both beginners as well as advanced practitioners.  By passively stretching muscles, yin yoga effectively remolds the fascia and connective tissue, thereby directly improving posture, joint mobility, breathing, athletic performance, recovery from injury, and healthy aging.

Even though Yin Yoga as a distinct style emerged in the West only recently, its roots go back to the classical Yoga of India and the qigong tradition of ancient China. This workshop introduces the theory and practice of Yin Yoga in order to better understand and embody its profound principles.

Topics include the history & philosophy of yin yoga; the restorative/gentle/dynamic continuum; anatomy & physiology of yin yoga; health benefits of yin; creative use of props; postures and sequences of yin asanas; yin pranayama and meditation; legs-up-the-wall; yoga nidra; sound baths; and teaching yin yoga. (Part 2 will also include standing yin & qigong; dynamic yin postures; 5 element theory & energy meridians; shiatsu & self massage; and tai chi as yin moving meditation.)

70% experiential and 30% theory & discussion. Please bring an edition of Bernie Clark's The Complete Guide to Yin Yoga and Lao Tzu's, Tao Te Ching (S. Mitchell trans.) which we will use over the weekend.  Also bring a journal for reflective writing and note taking.  We'll meet Friday from 5:30-8:30 pm and all day Saturday and Sunday from 9:30 am-6:00 pm.  Certificates of completion will be awarded to those who attend the whole weekend.

Movement & Meditation

Whether it’s after a long day at work or time spent under the sun, this 60-minute class invites you to slow down, unwind, and return to balance. Movement & Meditation blends gentle, mindful yoga with deeply restorative stillness, helping you reset both body and mind.

The first half of class offers slow, intentional movement and Yin-inspired postures to open the body and release accumulated tension. Each pose is held with awareness, allowing you to connect with your breath and move energy through areas that need care and attention.

The second half transitions into Yoga Nidra, a guided, sleep-based meditation practiced in stillness. This phase of the class promotes profound relaxation, supporting nervous system restoration and inner quiet. Scientists have found that just 30 minutes of Yoga Nidra can offer rest equivalent to several hours of deep sleep.

Movement & Meditation is an invitation to let go of the day’s weight and feel renewed from the inside out. You’ll leave grounded, clear, and recharged for the rest of your day or evening.

Intro to Yoga & The Eight-Limb Path

Foundations of Yoga & The Eight-Limb Path

Step onto your mat and discover a yoga class that feels like an invitation—welcoming students new to yoga while offering a return for seasoned students. This class is thoughtfully structured to introduce the essential elements of yoga in a way that’s accessible, supportive, and gently challenging, no matter your starting point.

We begin by settling in with breath and meditation (pranayama and dhyana.) Breathing exercises are designed to connect you to your vital energy. You might learn how to slow your exhale to calm the nervous system or try gentle breath ratios to bring clarity and focus. Guided meditation helps quiet the mind and bring attention to the present. These practices set a tone of mindfulness that carries through the entire class.

You’ll also learn to incorporate mudras—simple hand gestures that add a layer of intention and subtle energy to your practice. Each mudra is introduced with a brief explanation and time to experience its effects, whether it’s grounding, calming, or energizing.

The heart of the class is an alignment-based asana practice. Each posture is introduced with clear, detailed instructions and demonstrations, so you understand not just what to do, but why it matters. We use props and modifications freely, making every shape accessible, whether you’re working through an injury, brand new to yoga, or looking to deepen your understanding of familiar poses. The pace is steady but unhurried, giving you time to explore how your body moves and responds.

Throughout the session, we explore pratyahara—the practice of turning the senses inward. You’ll be guided to notice sensation, breath, and the subtle shifts in energy, learning how to soften your attention to outside distractions. This is a gentle but powerful tool for finding calm and focus, both on the mat and in everyday life.

As we move toward the end of class, we explore dharana, or concentrated awareness. This might look like focusing on the feeling of the breath, a single point in the body, or the repetition of a simple mantra. It’s an opportunity to practice being fully present, even as thoughts come and go.

We finish with a restful savasana, giving the body and mind time to integrate the practice. You’ll leave class with new tools for mindfulness, breath, and movement that you can take with you.

No experience or flexibility required—just bring your curiosity, your breath, and a willingness to explore. This class offers a gentle entry point for beginners, while providing enough layers for experienced yogis to deepen their practice. Come as you are—you’ll be met with compassion, clarity, and community.

Inner Stillness: Journaling & Yin Yoga Journey

This class invites you to slow down, release tension, and nourish both body and mind. Whether you are arriving after a long day at work or hours in the sun, this is your time to reset and restore. You will be guided through a blend of gentle yin yoga, reflective journaling, and deeply restful Yoga Nidra, creating a complete practice that supports healing and renewal.

We begin with grounding yin postures designed to target deep connective tissues and encourage stillness. These longer-held poses help the body soften and the breath deepen, naturally guiding your awareness inward. As tension unwinds and energy begins to flow more freely, the stage is set for deeper clarity and introspection. This slow, mindful movement creates a bridge between body and mind, preparing you for the practices that follow.

From this grounded place, you will be invited into a journaling session. With thoughtful prompts and quiet space for reflection, you will explore your thoughts, feelings, and inner voice. Writing in this state of openness allows emotions, insights, and intentions to surface more freely. The practice is not about perfect words or polished sentences, but about self-discovery and expression, creating a gentle way to connect with your deeper self.

We close with a short Yoga Nidra, a guided, sleep-based meditation often practiced lying down, though it can be modified for seated comfort. Scientists have found that 30 minutes of Yoga Nidra can feel as restorative as several hours of restful sleep. As you settle into this deep relaxation, your body and mind receive a profound recharge, leaving you refreshed, renewed, and with a sense of peace and balance. Please bring a journal, a pen, and a yoga mat. We have journals for sale at the studio. All levels are welcome and no experience is necessary.

Mindful Yin

Yin class begins with a centering, allowing you to connect with your body, mind, and spirit, listening to your inner self. Once settled, slow, engaged movements (not timed) allow you to focus on the areas of your body that may be resistant or need special attention. Pranayama (breath practice) is often guided. As class continues, exploration begins with your first "holding" posture, allowing your body to feel sensations and target areas as you settle into the posture, holding for time in quietness (3 to 5 minutes or longer) as you stress and hydrate the deep connective tissues, including ligaments, joints, bones, and fascia, which are often neglected.

The class is mainly practiced on the floor, which allows a slower and more meditative pace. Props are offered for support, encouraging stillness and internal awareness, helping to release deep-seated tension, improve flexibility, and promote relaxation. The final posture-savasana lasts a minimum of 7 to 10 minutes, which offers mental clarity, physical recovery, and emotional balance. You are then awakened and return to a seated posture, often ending the class with another pranayama to awaken the mind.

This unique class blends active movement with meditative stillness, guiding you through a full-body experience of both I AM Yoga and Yin Yoga. In just one hour, you’ll explore a sequence designed to awaken energy, deepen awareness, and support your overall well-being.

These poses are done mostly on the floor and held for several minutes to gently stretch connective tissues and promote energetic release. This is your opportunity to settle into stillness, feel the effects of the earlier movement, and allow your nervous system to deeply relax. No Experience Necessary. My name is Savannah, I’m 39 years old and I've been diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer that has spread to my spine. the cancer is incurable, and my life expectancy is 2-5 years, maybe longer if I can find any alternative methods. Because of this, my bones are weak, and I had to have surgery for fractures in two of my vertebrae and will continue to have weak bones and possible fractures.

I have had 2 CT scans, 4 MRI’s, multiple biopsies of the breast and bone marrow, as well as the vertebroplasty to fix the fractures.

I am currently on a leave of absence from work so I will need financial help to cover costs and medical bills for the 6 to 12 weeks, or possibly longer that I will be out of work.

This came on very sudden and has left my family and I shocked and in somewhat disbelief. I will do everything I can to fight this cancer so I can continue to be there to watch my daughter go on to live her life, raise my fur baby, and live out the rest of my days with my family.
